How to define a Security Consultant?

Here is a question that I have been asked many times throughout my career and the simple truth is that there is not just one answer. I decided to proceed with this Blog for many reasons. I will, over the coming months be delving into details of security procedures, risk assessment and practical security measures, that everyone can implement in their personal and business lives but as a starting point I think maybe I should answer the question that I get asked the most. In the society that we currently live, the risk to our security is on an ever increasing scale. We all worry about our safety and the security of our assets. We try to find ways to “predict” in order to prevent a breach of our security and therein lays the core business of a security consultant. Trying to predict the future is never an easy task and present circumstance of a client ensures that a full evaluation of the client’s needs is required. As a professional Security Consultant I advise companies and individuals on the best way to protect their assets, property and personal safety. Risk assessment and security design is a big part of the job. As a consultant I will implement a plan for the client to install or revamp procedures and equipment to meet their security needs. In addition to having technical expertise in security matters a good independent security consultant will have the skills to successfully complete a consulting assignment: Project Management, research, report writing and presentation skills to name a few. Most importantly an independent security consultant will not try and sell security equipment, products or services. This means that as a consultant I will give advice, based on the client’s interests rather than on a desire to sell a specific product or service.
